What does it mean to be involved?

Women’s Circus members do regular training in circus arts, music, and technical production. However, the Women’s Circus is not just a training organisation - it also an artistic organisation and a community organisation.

Becoming a member means you can also become part of our “community” - made up of past and present members of the circus who retain their connection to the circus in some way of its sixteen year history. The Women’s Circus has quarterly “Circus Days” where members share their work, hang out together and catch up on Circus news and also occasionally hold social events for members.

Our members also have a role within how the Women’s Circus is run, through the Community Advisory Group, made up of representatives from each training class. While the role of members has changed significantly with the incorporation of the Circus in 2004, members still have input and feedback on circus training, artistic work and the organisation itself.

How do I join?

The Women’s Circus has one intake of new women per year, in February each year. All new members first do the New Women’s Program for two terms. After one term new members can take other circus classes. If you are interested in joining to start in February 2008 , please download this form (Word file) and email or post it in.

What if I don’t want to train or perform?

You can choose how to participate in the Women’s Circus. You may choose to participate in the training program but not to perform. You can also assist with the end of year show in other ways, such as technical production, front of house, costumes and publicity.

How fit do you have to be to train with the Women’s Circus?

As fit as you are!

The Circus trainers will work with you and where your body is ‘at’ at the time.

Part of the process is learning about safe limits, about when to push yourself and when to take things gently. If you have a physical or sensory disability we will talk with you realistically about the limitations and opportunities you might find in the Women’s Circus.

How much does it cost?

Women’s Circus has an annual membership fee, which covers its members for insurance, and charges fees per term for its training classes.

For 2008, the membership fees are: $60.00 full time worker & $50.00 concession for first-time members and $20.00 full time worker and $15 concession for membership renewals (if you have been a member in the past).

The cost for training changes according to the number of weeks in the term. In 2008 Term 2, the training fees for 11 two-hour classes of aerials and tumbling are: $230 full time worker / $210 part time worker / $185 concession. The training fee for acrobalance 3 a two and a half hour class is $235 full time worker/ $205 part time worker/ $180 concession. The training fees for 11 two-hour classes of new women, performance, acrobalance, music, and “techie classes” are : $185 full time worker / $165 part time worker / $145 concession.

How long will it take to get into the Women’s Circus?

In the past we have used our priority groups to determine who can participate in the New Women’s program, but recently there has been space for all women to join. Please note that while there is only one yearly intake, non-members are most welcome to join our short courses on weekends or our intensive classes. Memberships for 2008 have now closed.
